2000 volkswagen jetta will not start! please help!!!?

I was listening to the music in the car and then went into the house and forgot all about the music until last minute! The battery was dead. I went to jump the car and the the part where the keyhole is broke it just kept turning and nothing! I was told to get a new ignition switch so i did. When my brother took apart the steering wheel thing and put the new switch in it was fine the he put the old switch in to check something and stuck some type of metal in to crank it on and the only thing that happened was the lights on the dash lit up and heard a click noise.So both ignition switches work but the engine will not start! I wonder is it something with the keyhole? Right now the switch assembly is hanging out the side and the lower half of my steering wheel is off. someone please help! I hate being without a car!
