Self propelled or riding mower?

Buying house on .35 acre plot with 1600 sq ft house and garage. Would it be overkill to buy a riding mower or too much for a self propelled. I know about individual preference, but from an informed source, is it more feasible for the riding or self propelled mower based on size of lot. Please be specific.
